It was a great match between the Americans and the Cubans. Last year they ranked 7th and 8th respectively. They didn’t qualify for the semi-final since Russia, Brazil, Poland and Argentina took those spots in the World League.
It was noted that both teams showed a back to back powerful spikes and kills above the net. Superb massive blocks and impressive digs from both teams. However, the Cubans finally bowed down in 3 straight sets (3-0) 25-23,25-22,25-23. Clearly, scores are close in each set. Cuban captain, Wilfredo Leon scored 16 points, solely for his great attacks. Yenry Bell contributed 14 points, 12 attacks, 1 single block and an ace. Cepeda Abreu gathered 11 hits, 10 attack points and an ace. On the other side, the American captain, Clayton Stanley made 17 points, 13 attacks and 4 serves. David Smith contributed 3 blocks and 2 attacks. Middle hitter, David Lee and setter, Donald Suxho combined 2 blocks each. Matthew Anderson garnered 13 points for his superb down the line and cross court hits. Rooney Sean got 11 points, 10 attacks and a single serve.
Previously, Poland outsmarted Bulgaria in 3 straight sets, 3-0 (25-23,25-20,25-28). So, USA versus POLAND in the gold medal match and CUBA against BULGARIA for the bronze. Who will take the gold, silver and bronze? Poland took the bronze last year. Bulgaria ranked 5th. USA and CUBA placed 7th and 8th respectively.
